Referee #1 No comments were received from referee 1 in the open discussion stage. Referee #2 General comments A general point which I miss, is a discussion of the estimated errors of the MLS SO2 data and a comparison with the validation results. This might indicate whether there are other error sources which have not been taken into consideration for estimating errors. This would be valuable information for data users to decide whether estimated errors from the data document could be used. I have looked into this and note that the estimated errors supplied with the data are

Observations of volcanic SO2 from MLS on Aura
Abstract. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is an important atmospheric constituent, particularly in the aftermath of volcanic eruptions. These events can inject large amounts of SO2 into the lower stratosphere, where it is oxidised to form sulfate aerosols; these in turn have a significant effect on the climate. The MLS instrument on the Aura satellite has observed the SO2 mixing ratio in the upper troposp...
متن کاملMonitoring of SO2 column concentration over Iran using satellite-based observations during 2005-2016
For the first time, sulfur dioxide concentration was monitored between 2005 and 2016 over Iran which is among the countries with a high SO2 emission rate in the world. To that end, SO2 column concentration at Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) was analyzed. OMI is a sensor onboard the Aura satellite which can measure daily SO2 concentration on the global scale...
متن کاملQBO and annual cycle variations in tropical lower stratosphere trace gases from HALOE and Aura MLS observations
[1] We have analyzed thirteen years (1993 to 2005) of HALOE and over two years of EOS MLS observations (September 2004 to December 2006) for QBO and annual cycle trace variations in tropical H2O, HCl, ozone, N2O, CO, HF, and CH4. We use these results to develop the theory explaining both Brewer-Dobson circulation (BDC) and QBO driven fluctuations in tropical trace gases. For H2O, BDC variations...

متن کاملMeasurements of SO[2] profiles in volcanic plumes from the NASA Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES)
[1] Satellite measurements are now recognized as a key element for the early detection and characterization of volcanic eruptions, in particular in the context of aircraft routing. A common tracer of volcanic plumes is sulfur dioxide (SO2), which so far has been measured by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) instruments and multispectral infrared (IR) sounders. Here we report the first SO2 vertical p...
